Arifa ("we", "us", "our") is an AI-powered news intelligence app that summarizes and analyzes publicly available news from trusted sources worldwide. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control it.

2. What We Collect

When you use Arifa, we collect the following types of data:

Personal Information (required)

  • Name — your display name, provided at signup.
  • Email address — used to create and manage your account.
  • User ID — a unique identifier we generate for your account.
  • Password — stored securely as a one-way hash. We never see or store your actual password.

Messages (optional)

  • AI chat conversations — if you use the chat feature, your messages and AI responses are saved so you can continue conversations later. You do not have to use this feature.

App Activity

  • App interactions (required) — we track how you use the app, such as articles viewed, chat queries made, and features accessed. This helps us enforce usage limits and improve the service.
  • Saved searches (optional) — if you choose to save a search, we store the query and filters. You can delete saved searches at any time.

Technical Data (automatic)

  • Crash logs and diagnostics — basic information about app crashes and performance, collected automatically to help us fix bugs. This data is processed temporarily and is not stored long-term.
  • Device identifiers — such as a Firebase installation ID, used for app analytics. This data is processed temporarily and is not stored long-term.

3. What We Do NOT Collect

  • We do not collect your location.
  • We do not collect your contacts, photos, or files.
  • We do not collect financial or payment information.
  • We do not track your web browsing history.

4. Why We Collect Your Data

  • App functionality — to run the app, show you news, and power the AI chat feature.
  • Account management — to create your account, verify your identity, and manage your login sessions.
  • Analytics — to understand how the app is used, fix crashes, and improve performance.

We do not use your data for advertising, marketing, or profiling.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties. Your data stays on our servers (hosted on Cloudflare's global network).

The only exceptions are:

  • AI processing — news articles (not your personal data) are processed by AI models to generate summaries and chat responses. Your chat messages are processed by AI to generate replies but are not used to train any models.
  • Law enforcement — we may disclose data if required by Kenyan law.

6. AI Processing

  • AI models summarize news articles and detect trends — this uses public news content, not your personal data.
  • If you use the chat feature, your messages are sent to an AI model to generate a response. These messages are not used to train any AI model.
  • AI-generated content may contain inaccuracies and should not be treated as professional advice.

7. Data Security

  • All data is encrypted when sent between your device and our servers (TLS).
  • Your password is hashed — we cannot see your actual password.
  • Access to our systems is restricted to authorized personnel only.

No system is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.

8. Deleting Your Account

You can delete your account at any time from the Profile tab in the Arifa app. When you delete your account:

  • Your account is immediately deactivated — you will be signed out and cannot log in again.
  • Your personal data (name, email, password, chat conversations, saved searches, and reading history) is permanently removed within 30 days.

9. Your Rights

Under the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019, you have the right to:

  • See what personal data we hold about you.
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate data.
  • Delete your account and all associated data.
  • Object to how we process your data.

10. Cookies

We use essential cookies for authentication and session management only. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app. Continued use of Arifa after changes means you accept the updated policy.
